Tank units cost less up front and are simpler to service; tankless units save space and heat water on demand, which suits homes with steady hot water needs. Either way, Lowcountry hard water matters: a tank needs regular flushing to keep sediment down, and a tankless unit needs periodic descaling to keep the heat exchanger clear. We size the unit to your fuel type and household demand rather than pushing one style.
How often should a home water heater be flushed?
For most Charleston-area homes, once a year is a reasonable rhythm for flushing a tank, and more often if you notice rumbling, popping, cloudy hot water, or slow recovery. Tankless systems should be descaled on a similar annual schedule. We can check the anode rod and pressure relief valve at the same visit.
Should I repair or replace my water heater?
Age and the type of failure decide it. A thermostat, heating element, igniter, or valve on a relatively young unit is usually worth repairing. A tank that is leaking from the tank body itself cannot be repaired and needs replacement. If the unit is well into its expected service life and you are losing hot water repeatedly, we will lay out both options and what each involves before you commit.
